Fall Fire Cider Recipe
It is the season for Fire Cider and now is the perfect time to make this classic, decongestant and anti-viral cider. Check out this recipe from the book African American Herbalism by Lucretia VanDyke.
Ingredients:
½ cup grated fresh horseradish
1-2 medium onion, sliced
1-2 cloves garlic, chopped or crushed
¼ teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper
1 jalapeno pepper
1-2 limes, lemons or oranges, juiced; reserve the peel
½ cup grated or chopped fresh ginger
2-3 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers (optional)
1 tablespoon ground turmeric, 1 inch fresh chopped turmeric, or 2 dried turmeric roots
1 bottle organic raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
¼ cup honey (or more to taste)
Instructions:
Place all ingredients, except the vinegar and the honey, in a quart jar
Pour in the apple cider vinegar, covering all the ingredients
Cover the jar with a plastic lid, or put parchment paper over the top of the jar, and screw on the metal lid (the paper helps prevent the lid from rusting)
Shake well
Store in a cool, dark and dry place for a month, shaking the jar at least three times a week
When ready, strain the ingredients using a doubled cheesecloth or fine strainer, pressing out all the liquid. Add the honey (to taste) and mix well
Take one shot daily
Note: this can be used when cooking. It is known to go great with greens, salad dressings, and many other things!
